Calcium balance at the postmoult stage of the freshwater crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet).

چکیده

Net uptake of calcium by Austropotamobius begins 15-30 min after the moult and rapidly reaches a maximum level (2 /imoles/g/h at io°C) which is maintained throughout stages A and B. At stage Cx the rate of net uptake falls sharply to a lower level which is gradually reduced until equilibrium is reached at C4. The uptake mechanism is near-saturated at 0-4 mM-Ca/1 and half-saturated at 0-13 mM-Ca/1. In the absence of external HCO3~ net uptake is reduced. Calcium uptake is against an electrochemical gradient. The concentration of ionised calcium in the haemolymph remains unchanged during the intermoult cycle.

Total body calcium and haemolymph calcium concentrations in the crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet).

Variations in the concentration of calcium in the haemolymph and of total body calcium in Austropotamobius pallipes have been investigated. Haemolymph calcium concentration was independent of both body size and sex. During premoult the calcium concentration of the haemolymph rose from 11-8 ITIM/1 to 15-0 HIM/I. After the moult the calcium concentration remained high during stages A and B but de...

Calcium balance at the premoult stage of the freshwater crayfish Austropotamobus pallipes (Lereboullet).

The premoult stage in Austropotamobtus pallipes is characterized by a net loss of calcium which increases from Do to a maximum of 0-83 /imoles/g/h at D4. The concentration of ionized calcium in the haemolymph does not increase during the premoult stage although there is an increase in complexed calcium. The electrochemical gradient across the body surface is similar to that at the intermoult st...

Resistance to the crayfish plague, Aphanomyces astaci (Oomycota) in the endangered freshwater crayfish species, Austropotamobius pallipes

The pathogen Aphanomyces astaci Schikora 1906 is responsible for the decline of the native crayfish species of Europe, and their current endangered status. This pathogenic species is native to North America and only colonizes aquatic decapods. The North American crayfish species have a high resistance to this pathogen, while species from other regions are highly susceptible. However, recent fie...

An automatic respirometer for determining oxygen uptake in crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet)) over periods of 3-4 days.

1. An automatic respirometer has been developed for continuous measurements over 3-4 days on 1-15 g crayfish. The sensor is a modified Mackereth oxygen electrode. Respiration is recorded on a millivolt potentiometric pen recorder during closed periods when the O2 concentration in the medium falls to a predetermined level. A solenoid-operated valve is then opened via a relay circuit energized by...

A bomb set to drop: parthenogenetic Marmorkrebs for sale in Ireland, a European location without non-indigenous crayfish

Ireland is one of the few locations in Europe where non-indigenous North American crayfish species have not been introduced, and is a refuge for endangered white-clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes (Lereboullet, 1858). The parthenogenetic crayfish species Marmorkrebs, Procambarus fallax f. virginalis (Hagen, 1870), is sold in the pet trade in Ireland within the recorded range of A. palli...
